Instructions
Prepare the egg mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, maple syrup (if using), cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt until fully combined.
Soak the bread: Dip each slice of sourdough bread into the egg mixture, making sure both sides are thoroughly soaked. Let the bread sit for about 20-30 seconds on each side to absorb the flavors.
Heat the skillet: In a large non-stick skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Make sure the butter coats the surface of the pan evenly.
Fry the bread: Place the soaked slices of bread into the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. Add more butter as needed for additional slices.
Serve: Once the French toast is crispy and cooked through, remove from the skillet and serve immediately. Garnish with powdered sugar, fresh berries, and drizzle with maple syrup.

Notes
Best Bread for French Toast: Day-old sourdough bread is perfect for this recipe. If you don’t have day-old bread, toast the slices lightly before soaking in the egg mixture.
Storage: Leftover French toast can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat in a toaster or oven for best results.
Freezing: French toast can be frozen and reheated. Let the slices cool completely, then wrap in plastic wrap and freeze for up to a month. Reheat in the oven or toaster directly from frozen.
